Why chafing still happens in cooler weather (and how to stop it)
You’d think once the heat dies down, chafing would too. Less sweat, cooler air… what could go wrong? The unfortunate truth though: chafing doesn’t take a winter break.
Even in cool conditions, that mid run burn and post-ride shower sting can still find you. Whether you’re running on icy roads or grinding out intervals on the indoor trainer, your skin may still pay the price of poor planning.
Let’s break down why it happens - and how to stop it before it starts...as they say, prevention is better than cure.
Dry Air = Dry Skin
Cold air and indoor heating both suck the moisture right out of your skin. Dry skin loses elasticity, becomes rougher and rubs more easily against clothing or skin. That dry rub creates micro-abrasions that lead to the same old burning, stinging sensation you’d expect on a 35°C race day.
👉 Pro tip: Applying an anti-chafe solution creates a protective barrier that helps your skin move smoothly under clothing - no matter the humidity (or lack of it).
More Layers = More Friction
Winter training means extra kit: base-layers, bibs, jackets, gloves - each with seams and pressure points.
Runners, you may feel it under your arms where seams overlap, between your toes thanks to thicker socks or under your sports bra.
Cyclists, even in cooler weather, you could expect chafe in all the usual hotspots - your chamois regions or shoulder strap areas.
👉 Don’t skip your chamois cream or anti-chafe balm just because it’s cooler out. It’s as important in winter as your bib tights and wind vest.

Sweat Still Happens (Even Indoors)
If you’ve spent any time on the indoor trainer, you know that “not sweating” is a myth.
Indoor cycling often makes things worse: higher core temps, repetitive movement and a static bike position can cause saddle-sore irritation, especially after back-to-back sessions.
That salty sweat builds up and sits against your skin, creating the perfect storm for irritation…so if you’re turning to the indoor trainer to get your winter hours in, you should consider extra protection.

Chafing doesn’t care what the weather’s doing. It’s caused by friction, dryness and movement…and those things don’t disappear when the mercury drops.
So whether you’re chasing winter sun on the roads, smashing virtual climbs on Zwift or logging your daily steps, your skin deserves the same attention as your gear.
