Outrageous fun at Swiss Epic

“It was outrageous! Incredibly beautiful, horribly tough, and totally luxurious all at the same time,” shares Swiss Epic finisher, Kylie Hanekom.

The BikeHub content and marketing manager, along with her experienced bike companion, Ila Stow, embarked on “an adventure of a lifetime” with just 6 weeks pre-warning (and survived).

Highly under prepared for the expected elevation, the duo wasn’t going to miss out on an opportunity to experience the European version of the well-known South African Cape Epic.

“Simply nothing in South Africa that can prepare you for the magnitude of the Alps,” says Kylie.

The Swiss version also includes what Kylie describes as “top notch” Swiss hotel accommodation with vastly different experiences. A welcomed treat after spending the day climbing the never-ending mountains and navigating the notoriously technical Alphine descents.

“We saw parts of the alps we would never otherwise get to! And stayed in towns we'd never have seen any other way. It was uncomfortably tough, but even pushing my bike up an unrideable mountain pass at 2000 metres above sea level is way more fun than sitting at a desk!

Experiencing life by bike is her favourite way to spend her time, and this trip was another reminder of how big and small the world is and how different cycling in Europe is.

“It was special to see so many people from all over the world, coming together with a common interest. We're so privileged to have had the opportunity.”
